Luton have signed Aston Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer on loan until the end of the season, with the former England youth international eyeing a play-off repeat of the best day of his life.

The 29-year-old played a vital role in helping Villa gain promotion to the Premier League, including saving two penalties in the play-off semi-final shootout against West Brom and playing in the 2-1 Wembley win over Derby.

“I’ve come to help the club continue that as much as I can,” said Steer, adding: “I had the best day of my life playing in the play-off final for Aston Villa, and I want to replicate that. I’d love to push on, get up into that top six and have another crack at it.”

Steer comes in to replace record signing Simon Sluga, who has today joined Bulgarian champions Ludogorets.

The new recruit knows Luton boss Nathan Jones from a loan spell at Yeovil back in 2011/12 and he told lutontown.co.uk: “I know Henri (Lansbury) and James Bree from Villa, I played with Bez (Luke Berry) years ago at Cambridge and even the gaffer when I first went to Yeovil, so it’s nice to see a few familiar faces.

“I’ve played against Sheasy (James Shea) quite a bit as well, and he’s a great goalkeeper and person, so I’m sure I won’t have any problems settling in.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind day having been in at the Villa training ground this morning, then getting down the M1 in time for training. But I can’t wait to get out on the grass, then jump on the coach to Swansea and get to know everyone else.

“I’ve been watching Luton’s progress from afar with interest. Knowing a couple of the lads here you always do, and I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen. It’s been a great rise up the Football League in recent seasons.”

Steer started his career with Norwich City in 2010 before going out on loan for the first time in the 2011-12 season to Yeovil.

He also spent time on loan at Cambridge United, who Luton face in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday, before being signed by Aston Villa in 2013 to become their back-up goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Loan spells at Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Charlton Athletic followed.

Steer has been given the number 25 shirt.
