Simon Sluga has completed his move from Luton Town to Ludogorets, subject to FIFA clearance, a move which is expected to pave the way for the loan signing of Aston Villa’s Jed Steer.

The Croatian international was heavily linked with a move to the Bulgarian champions at the weekend when he was not named in the squad for the 0-0 Championship draw with Blackburn Rovers.

Boss Nathan Jones then suggested afterwards that a deal was in motion. The Hatters and Ludogorets had yet to officially announce a deal before Bulgarian journalist Metodi Shumanov posted on Twitter that a deal has been done, along with two photographs of keeper in a Ludogorets shirt and scarf.

Shumanov reported that Sluga said: ‘I’m very happy to continue my career at Ludogorets, a club with great ambitions and a fantastic reputation in Europe’.

He also posted: ‘Sluga is already in Turkey where Ludogorets are having their mid-season preparations. He’s already had his medical and signed his contract. The Croatia international will be unveiled in front of Bulgarian media next week’

Luton then confirmed the transfer of the 28-year-old, who remains the club’s record signing, having joined from HNK Rijeka in 2019 for £1.3million.

He suffered a baptism of fire on his debut when he let a Britt Assombalonga shot through his fingers as Luton drew 3-3 on their return to the Championship. Further howlers followed at Derby County, which saw him dropped but he’d shown his shot-stopping potential and came into his own after a two-and-a-half month spell on the sidelines.

It was Sluga’s incredible save in the dying moments against Wigan which earned Luton a valuable point, just before the Covid-19 suspension of football in England, ultimately helping to kick-start Town’s Great Escape.

Last season he became an influential player, getting voted Player of the Year by Luton Town Supporters’ Trust and the Bobbers Travel Club and earning himself cult hero status among fans.

Sluga leaves Luton with 94 appearances to his name, while the Hatters faithful hailed the keeper on social media.
