Joe Morrell transfer is ‘a coup’ and part of Luton’s ‘realistic, logical and very, very good business’

Nathan Jones has called the capture of Joe Morrell “a coup” as the Wales international moved from Bristol City today, for a fee understood to be £200,000, after a month of negotiations for the highly-rated 23-year-old.

The midfielder, who came up through the Robins’ academy ranks, becomes Town’s fifth signing of this transfer window and their third international calibre player, following the signings of fellow Dragons stars Tom Lockyer and Rhys Norrington-Davies.

Speaking about Morrell, Jones said: ”It’s a great coup for us, but I think all our signings are realistic, logical and very, very good business.”

The manager added: “It has been a long process because it has probably been ongoing for about a month or so but we’re delighted to have him. It has kind of not helped him having so many international games, he has been away a lot but we’re delighted to have him.

“The deal was laid out, it fitted within our budget with what we could do at this time. We’re always very grateful to the board, they push boundaries for us, they back us in terms of judgement in terms of what we need. In all fairness we don’t ask for ridiculous things, a little bit of help and they’re always there.

“I think that we have had a real productive window, not masses of numbers but really improved. Renewed the ones we needed to and then brought in real competition, so we have had a real good window.

He ticks a lot of our boxes. He ticks a lot of our boxes, hungry to do well, really wants to play first-team football. He had a taste at Cheltenham, did well and then had an advanced one at Lincoln where he did really, really well.

“I watched him a lot at Lincoln and then when the opportunity came available, he ticks a lot of boxes for us in terms of what we look for so we are delighted to have him.

Asked what Morrell’s best position is, Jones said: “I think he could play all three, I really do. He’s very versatile, he’s played as a holder, in terms of that defensive ball-playing midfielder.

“We’ve brought him in for that role but we believe he can play in a two as he does for Wales, he’s played as an eight for Wales so we think he’s very versatile and massive scope for development.”
