Lockyer claims Adebayo winner against Bristol City was his after first goal dream

Tom Lockyer is adamant it was him that scored the winner against Bristol City, not Elijah Adebayo, and joked he’s prepared to go to the dubious goals panel.

The centre back had put Luton ahead against the run of play in the first half with his first goal for the Hatters in front of the travelling Robins fans, who had been giving him stick for his Bristol Rovers past.

The Wales international admitted he’d dreamt of doing that the night before, but thinks television footage will prove he bagged a brace, though the winner was awarded to Town’s top scorer after a second half scramble.

“It was probably the worst game I’ve had in a Luton shirt, which is funny really because then I go on and score two goals. It’s a funny old world,” said Lockyer.

Asked about breaking his Hatters duck with a goal that definitely will go down as his, late in the first half, the defender said: “I can’t remember too much about it. I just remember it came off my head and I looked at the lino, he didn’t have his flag up, so I was buzzing.

“I went to sleep last night, thinking I was going to score down that end, which obviously happened.

“I didn’t know I was going to score at the other end as well, but it is what it is. I’ll take it. It’s a good night for me.”

Town took the points after James Bree’s free-kick caused chaos in the City box, with the ball bundled over.

Asked what happened, Lockyer said: “I’ve let myself down with the header. I should’ve just put it in straight away but I’ve headed it at the geezer, he couldn’t sort his feet out and it’s gone in.

“Eli’s been in the game long enough now to know that if he runs away with his hand up, he’s going to get it.

“When the footage from behind the goal comes out, I fully expect that to go down as mine, and Breezy gets the assist he deserves.”

Bree had provided the assist for Lockyer’s first and asked what Adebayo will say to his claims of a second, Lockyer said: “He’s got loads of goals already. I was obviously a bit gutted coming off at the end, knowing I was on a hat-trick.

“I wanted that match ball, but it wasn’t to be. Eli’s been brilliant this season. I’m not sure how many he’s got but I don’t think he can be claiming that, if I’m honest.

“I’m fully in the ring for that and when that footage comes out, the dubious goals panel, if it has to be, then I will go down that route.

“Eli’s got enough, so let’s just wait and see the footage.”
