Nathan Jones admitted his side were second best but ground out a victory against Bristol City with Elijah Adebayo scoring the winner.

Six changes due to injuries and knocks meant for a disjointed performance from the Hatters and they were on the back foot for the first half, but still managed to take a half time lead.

Tom Lockyer, who had been the subject of Bristol boos, after his associations with the Robins arch rivals Rovers, rose to head home a James Bree cross, for his first goal for the club.

While the right back was the star man for his pinpoint deliveries, with a case to make for two assists, Adebayo wheeled away in celebration after a goalmouth scramble in the 68th minute.

That looked to be his 12th of the season, though centre back Lockyer later tried to claim it for himself.

Whoever scored it, it came after Andreas Weimann had the freedom of Kenilworth Road to pick his spot past Shea, who later made a stunning fingertip save to keep out the Austrian.

While the result got Town quickly back to winning ways after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United, moving them up to tenth in the Championship, manager Jones was honest in his appraisal of the evening’s work.

“Performance-wise, we’re a mile off where we want to be,” he said, adding: “But we’ve had so many games. We’ve had Bournemouth here, which went to the wire, we had two away games, tough game at Bramall Lane where we dig in with 10 men and then we’ve had to come here tonight and we haven’t played well but we’ve managed to grind out a result.

“We know we can play better, we know we will play better, we’ve had to make six changes tonight, most of them enforced and then we’ve put four or five of them in that haven’t played football in six, seven weeks, so in the context we’re delighted with the win. Performance-wise, we’ve got to get better, but it happens.”

Goalscorer Lockyer had been out of action since November with what the defender has called “glass ankle” and after his return, Jones said: “I’m pleased he’s back and he’s managed to get near enough 90 minutes into him, that’s pleasing.

“He had a bit of stick from the Bristol fans, so it was good to do that, but I’m just pleased he’s scored for us.

“To be fair, Bristol were probably better than us tonight, and that’s not often we can say that to a team that comes here, so they contributed to a good performance, we contributed to a poor performance, but at the end of the day we’ve gone on to 38 points, gone into top 10, so it shows that his is one of our games hand as well, so it was really important we increased our points tally.”

educative and interesting, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head.

  9. Bell. How many more goals and near misses against is he going to be instrumental in before he’s given a rest? If the one in injury time had gone in it would have been all we deserved for persevering with him. Give Potts a try, or Onyedinma down the left (though I think we might need him upfront if there are still niggles in the squad). This is over half a season now. Bell’s poor form in tracking back and stopping crosses isn’t a blip. It’s been almost every game he’s played.

And Muskwe looked again like a development squad prospect. He’s not first team ready.

But on the positive, Osho looked decent despite being in a makeshift defence. Bree had a good game (tip for Bell, look across at the pitch at Bree’s positioning and how quick he runs back into defence). And Campbell and Onyedinma made a big impact when they came on.

And ultimately it’s 3 points when playing crap. Mark of an an alright side. Just a shame that it was so cold that it was very hard to appreciate that at the time.

But Blackburn will cut anything like that to shreds.
