Luton 1 Huddersfield 1: Bradley keeps Premier League push evenly poised – Report and reaction

Nathan Jones said Luton should’ve had a penalty and a man advantage over Huddersfield after an “electric” first half, but the Hatters put on a resilient display after the break to still be in with a shot of the Premier League.

Captain Sonny Bradley drew Town level on the half hour, volleying in Kal Naismith’s stunning free-kick, to as he continued his remarkable record of scoring in front of the Sky cameras to cancel out Daniel Sinani’s 12th minute opener.

But, in truth, both sides should’ve had a spot-kick. The Terrier’s claim came within eight seconds of the kick-off when James Bree pushed Harry Toffolo in the back.

But Referee Robert Jones was unmoved then and again with the Hatters in the ascendancy. Cameron Jerome bared down on goal and Naby Sarr hauled him down without touching the ball.

Luton boss Nathan Jones said: “First half, I thought we were electric, I really did, front footed, our opponent should have had a pen, should have had a sending off, all those things.

“Bree had a chance, Harry Cornick’s had a chance, Henri Lansbury’s had a glorious opportunity, so I thought we were really, really on top, and it was a wonderful football game, tactically.

“Both sides went at it and it just shows we’re a Championship side.”

But after the break, Luton looked leggy as Huddersfield controlled the half, yet without creating any clear-cut chances.

They survived to the final whistle, save for an early limping departure of Lansbury, and will go to the John Smiths Stadium on Monday needing victory to reach the Championship play-off final at Wembley on May 29.

Asked what Town have to do in the second leg in Yorkshire, Jones said: “The same job as we knew we had to do. It’s not like suddenly it’s impossible.

“We’ve come here, we haven’t lost the game and that was really, really important, we didn’t lose the game.

“First half we were excellent, should have got more from the half, but that’s the way it goes, and it’s a wonderful tie to go away at Huddersfield now.”

Luton are still yet to beat Huddersfield this term and asked if Luton are still confident of getting a result, the manager said: “Of course we are, or we might as well save on the hotel bill and stay here.

“They were probably better second half without getting the chances.”
