Muscle ripped off the bone means post-op lay-off for one Hatter, but two return for Millwall

Dan Potts and Cauley Woodrow are fit and available ahead of Luton’s Championship clash at home to Millwall on Sunday, while Reece Burke is close to a return, but Henri Lansbury will be out for longer after an operation to reattach a thigh muscle to his bone.

The recovery of Potts in particular with be a boost to boss Rob Edwards who will take charge of his first home match after replacing Nathan Jones last month.

The defender had announced on social media that he’d fractured his back, but the injury wasn’t as severe as first thought and he could be fit to add some much-needed defensive strength after Amari’i Bell’s red card in last week’s defeat at Middlesbrough left Luton with Tom Lockyer as the only recognised centre half.

Edwards said: “Pottsy being around the ground is great for us. His professionalism, his communication, the way he trains is top-notch.

“It’s absolutely brilliant, he’s made a great impression on me and the new staff in a very short space of time. He’s such a good guy, he’s a leader so you’re right it’s great to have him around the group.”

Reece Burke has been sidelined with a hamstring problem since the end of September and his progress will further improve Edwards’ defensive options.

The manager said: “I wouldn’t want to put a timescale on it, but then I’m probably going to! We hope in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully just before the New Year, that would be ideal.

“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him either, I want him back and him to stay back, that’s the main thing right now, but we’ve got a little bit of hope that he might be before the New Year.”

Forward Woodrow has been out of action since mid-September with a calf problem, having only featured eight times since his return to the club in the summer, when he was billed by former boss Jones as a “marquee signing”. Edwards is equally excited about the 28-year-old, saying: “He’s a really good footballer first and foremost, but I do think he’s a goal threat. He’s a fantastic finisher, but he’s really, really talented.

“He can drop into certain spaces and he can create as well as score and be on the end of stuff, so I think he’s going to give us something quite unique.

“I’m really looking forward to getting him back amongst it as I think he’s really talented footballer.”

However, Lansbury, who limped out of the 1-1 draw with Sunderland in October has a longer recovery after undergoing surgery on a quad muscle, which effectively tore away from the bone.

Edwards said: “H is obviously a bit more longer term. He had an operation on the muscle to repair the muscle, so H will be longer, but he’s progressing well. He’s certainly going to be into next year.

“It was a quad, his thigh muscle. He basically ripped it off the bone, pulled it really badly, so he had to have that repaired, so that’s going to be a bit longer. It’ll be into next year.

“I don’t want to put a timescale on it, but he’s progressing well. He’s well on track.”
