Luton chief executive Gary Sweet has moved to allay any “nervousness” about a “fairly big” summer of change by suggesting that the capture of Fred Onyedinma is the first signing of a series that will improve the squad.
The Wycombe Wanderers attacker was unveiled today as the club’s first signing of the transfer window, having seen top scorer James Collins and centre half Matty Pearson move on to Cardiff and Huddersfield, respectively.
With potentially eight more players out of contract, but no confirmation yet of the club’s retained list, Sweet didn’t shy away from eluding to a bigger squad turnaround, but is positive about the opportunities that present themselves.
“I’m so excited,” he said, adding: “There’s clearly a lot of nervousness around about the transition this summer because it’s going to be a fairly big one in comparison to normal.
“Despite what great servants some of those players who leave have been, any player that leaves, any member of staff that leaves, there’s an opportunity to improve our club.
“With Fred’s acquisition, I genuinely believe that. Even though Fred’s not directly replacing any of those that have gone so far, it’s a strengthening of the squad.
“We are intent on and focused firmly on players like Fred coming in. Not necessarily in the same position or the same age, but a variety of players that will come in and increase our strengths within the squad.
“It’s really important we do that this year.”
