Jordan Clark has signed a new long-term contract with Luton Town, prompting relief among supporters who’d briefly hit the panic button over a playful social media post that hinted at his departure, before revealing the good news.

Fans were left fearing the worst when Luton posted an image of the midfielder alongside the words “Thank you for the memories”. However, six minutes later the club followed it with a second post reading: “So, let’s make some new ones”, confirming the two-time Player of the Year had agreed fresh terms at Kenilworth Road.

The news represents a major boost for manager Jack Wilshere as he prepares for his first full season in charge, particularly after speculation from the final game of the season, where Clark appeared emotional, and supporters feared that indicated his last appearance in a Hatters shirt.

“Getting this one over the line is a massive deal for us as a club,” Wilshere told the club’s website. “It was one of my biggest priorities this summer.”

Clark enjoyed the most prolific season of his career last term, scoring 13 goals from midfield as the Hatters lifted the Vertu Trophy at Wembley and narrowly missed out on the League One play-offs.

Wilshere believes the 32-year-old’s influence extends far beyond his goals and assists.

“Clicker’s performances on the pitch speak for themselves,” he said. “His goals, assists and quality on the ball mean we always want him out there for as long as we can, because he makes things happen and produces big moments.

“He’s been our talisman on so many occasions and a vital part of Luton Town’s story for so many years now.”

Since arriving on a free transfer from Accrington Stanley in 2020, Clark has become one of the club’s most influential signings of the decade, helping the Hatters win promotion to the Premier League and making more than 200 appearances.

Wilshere also highlighted the midfielder’s importance off the pitch as Luton look to build on the momentum generated during the second half of last season.

“He knows what it takes to achieve huge things with this club, so having him here in our environment to drive standards every day, create the culture we want and help us work towards more success is absolutely vital.

“We know what he means to the supporters and this news will give them a close season boost, just as it does everyone at the club.

“We all love Clicker as much as they do. He’s a top player and a top person, and we are so glad to have him with us for the long term.”

The announcement is the first piece of big news ahead of what the Hatters hope will be a busy summer at Kenilworth Road as Wilshere reshapes his squad ahead of another promotion push in League One.
