Eli excels, magic midfield, Bree the big cheese and daring to dream? – 6 talking points from Hull 1 Luton 3.

Luton Town will go into the international break in third place in the Championship table after a perfect away performance at Hull City saw the Hatters win 3-1. Here are our takeaways from the game.

  1. Excellent Elijah excels again!

When Elijah Adebayo limped off towards the end of the 4-0 win over Preston on Wednesday night there were fears among the Town fan base that he might not be available to face the Tigers.

Not only was the Fulham graduate available to play but he once again he showed why he is one of the best number nines in the Championship.

Adebayo opened the scoring with his trademark run down the left channel before he cut inside and curled into the far post much like he did at Coventry.

The striker delivered a superb all-round display, with him leading the press particularly noticeable. It was that effort which saw Adebayo steal the ball from Sean McLaughlin 25 yards from goal and as Matt Ingram advanced in the home goal the forward coolly rolled strike partner Harry Cornick in to tap in an empty net.

It is now 18 games the attacker has scored in for the Hatters and they haven’t lost any of them. Adebayo continues to prove to be the best £250,000 Luton have spent in years.

2. Magic midfield pair up there with anything in the league

When teams face Luton and see the names of Allan Campbell and Jordan Clark on the team sheet fear is running through the opposition and it is easy to see why.

Right from the start of the season their relentless energy has been clear to see but the improvement they have made on the ball as the campaign has gone on has been incredible, all the more so when you consider Clark didn’t think he could play in the heart of the midfield when told by boss Nathan Jones that he could.

It was Clark who carried the ball forward before being brought down for the third goal. These two are amazing. If one doesn’t get the ball off the opposition the other will and whoever gets it will drive at the opposition.

This pair are forming an incredible combination, one which is taking the Town to incredibly dizzy heights.

3. Three is the magic number!

Three goals, three points and up to position three in the Championship table!

This win was a wonderful one with the quality of the performance, but the fact it led the Town to third in the table made it all the sweeter. This isn’t third after a few games, it is after 38 matches so it is a genuine league position. They are also four points clear of seventh place and in a position few can scarcely believe, but believe it Town fans, it really is happening!

4. Brilliant Bree rounds off the win in style!

Remember that time when James Bree was getting slaughtered for his delivery at set pieces? Those days are well gone, with plenty of excellent deliveries in recent times. And now he has added scoring from direct free kicks to his repertoire.

His icing-on-the-cake free-kick from 20 yards, which thundered in off the bar, put any doubt which way the result was going to bed. What’s more, he gave a perfectly assured performance at the unfamiliar position of centre-back too, due to Town’s defensive injury issues. To paraphrase his new terrace chant, sweet dreams are made of this indeed!

5. Progression guaranteed once again!

Those three points won at Hull took the Hatters beyond their mark of last season, which means whatever happens after the international break Luton will have progressed this term.

To beat the tally of last term is fantastic in its own right, but to do it eight games from the end of the season is incredible and a sign of just how good this team have been over the course of the campaign.

Progression is a word used a lot at Luton Town and with good reason. It is what they judge themselves on and they should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved so far, regardless of what may or may not follow.

6. Dare to dream mark 2?

It is only a month or so ago that Luton fans were dreaming of their team making the play-offs, but could it be that as incredible as it sounds, they were setting their sights too low?

The win at the MKM Stadium has moved Town up to third in the table, six points behind Bournemouth in second place. The Cherries have two games in hand of Luton but they have a nightmare run of fixtures to finish their season with. Luton have three tough games on their schedule but they are carrying so much form that it almost feels irrelevant who they are playing right now.

There is a two-week break now but when the Championship resumes the Hatters will go in search of Bournemouth and with only Fulham picking up more points than Nathan Jones’ charges in 2022, don’t rule out Luton ending their play-off hopes in the best way possible. By bypassing them completely and going up automatically.

  1. Brilliant day out. Brilliant season! Best team in the division, best manager in the pyramid. Best owners in the pyramid. Best staff in the pyramid. Best value squad in the pyramid.

Whatever happens now. And whatever happens next season, remember not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Yes for years we’ve got better than last. But that doesn’t always happen. There are 23 (or 19!) other teams out there wanting to win matches. A dip will happen at some point and then we come into our own in the stands. Stay strong and believe in the club.

7th point. The behaviour of Hull fans. One section throwing bottles at another section. A staircase full of stewards to keep one section of Hull fans from another. Leaving en masse on 70ish minutes. A little kid running on for a selfie with the keeper when a corner was about to be taken. A bunch of little kids running on after the final whistle. Very poor from them.

But lovely chat over chips with some old Hull boys before the match. More of them please Hull. And much less of the twats you let attend today on the £2 guest tickets
