Jack Wilshere has kept his cards close to his chest over whether Josh Keeley or James Shea will start in goal for Luton Town at Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow, insisting the club need two goalkeepers competing for the position.
After mistakes in the defeat at Stevenage, Keeley was dropped for Luton’s last League One fixture against Bradford City, only for Shea to concede a saveable goal in the early stages, from which the Hatters could not recover, losing 1-0.
Shea, who largely put on the gloves for cup competitions last season, kept his spot for the following EFL Trophy games against Ipswich Under-21s and Colchester, though Keeley was drafted into the Republic of Ireland squad midway through the international break.
Asked whether the change for the Bradford game was a one-off decision or part of a longer-term plan, Wilshere told media: “I’m not going to give you the answer because then everyone will know who’s playing in goal tomorrow.”
Wilshere said Keeley’s international involvement had provided a useful opportunity for the goalkeeper to experience a different environment after coming out of the Luton side, though the original plan had been for game time in the cup competitions.
“Josh knows that he can do better than he’s done,” Wilshere said. “Probably if you ask Sheasy about the Bradford goal as well, he would say that he could do better.”
He added: “We need two goalies that are pushing each other and fighting to get in the team.”
