Luton Town and Barnsley have both been fined £13,500 following the mass confrontation involving players and staff after their League One meeting at Kenilworth Road last month.

The Football Association confirmed that both clubs have been sanctioned after an incident following Luton’s 2-1 victory on Tuesday, October 20, when tempers flared after the final whistle as Hatters manager Jack Wilshere shook hands with his Barnsley counterpart Daniel Stendel.

It was alleged that both clubs had failed to ensure their players and/or technical area staff did not behave in an improper and/or provocative manner after the final whistle.

Both Luton and Barnsley admitted the charges, with an independent Regulatory Commission subsequently imposing identical £13,500 fines.

The confrontation saw Wilshere take exception to something Stendel said during their post-match handshake, with television footage showing the Luton boss pushing his opposite number before players and staff from both sides became involved.

Speaking after the match, Wilshere played down the incident, describing it as “just passion” and insisting there was no lack of respect between the two managers.

“Nothing but respect for them. At the end, we shook hands and it’s just passion. I want to win. He wants to win and that’s that,” he said.

Wilshere added: “He just grabbed my hand. I think he wants to win. I want to win. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and his team.”

He also suggested the confrontation reflected the unity within his own squad, saying: “We have to be respectful and we are and they [Barnsley] were as well, in my opinion, but also sometimes you can see their togetherness in those moments where we wanted to win so badly and we’ve got each other’s back.”
