Luton 0 Blackburn 0: Jones rues big chances to topple Rovers – Report and reaction

Nathan Jones lamented two great chances to take three points against Blackburn Rovers as his Luton side shaded a physical contest but only came away with a point against the Championship promotion chasers.

Kal Naismith squandered a glorious chance and Cameron Jerome hit the post as the Hatters, without injured top scorer Elijah Adebayo, enjoyed the best of the first half.

But second-placed Rovers had nine clean sheets in 11 league contests before arriving at Kenilworth Road.

They too were without their top marksman, with Ben Brereton-Diaz on international duty with Chile and, without him, Blackburn were relatively impotent, save for James Shea tipping over John Buckley’s free-kick.

But Jones said: “I felt we were at least good value for a point. We’ve had the two best chances of the game, Kal Naismith should score, Cameron Jerome should score, and then we’ve had some set-plays there with just a bit of communication we would have had some free headers from point blank range, so we were probably slightly the better side today.”

That chance was when defender Gabriel Osho and Tom Lockyer – superb throughout, alongside Naismith – both went for a header. Osho looked in a better position to score, but the Wales international got his head to it first in a bid to score his second goal in successive matches.

Jones added: “It was a real tight game and playing against Blackburn who have dominated and overrun sides, so I’m relatively pleased, plus it’s been a 10 point month and the FA Cup win, so it’s been a real good month for us.”

He added: “We created enough to have won the game today, we haven’t played fluently in any way, but we defended well.

“(Our) keeper’s had very little to do, defended (Sam) Gallagher really well first half and they’ve got that big a side and we were missing some big players today, Elijah, Sonny Bradley.

“So, to compete with those, we’ve had to really defend well and we’ve defended our box fantastically well this week, and I’m really pleased as it’s been a tough month and relentless month, so to put in the level of performance and to get the points return, plus the FA Cup win, shows we’re in a good place.”

  2. It’s a shame as first half we were the better side till the wind picked up and really should have been 2 up. Second half we tried to play Blackburn’s game and struggled. Glad to see Cornick back but it will take him time to get fit. We do need another goal scorer as when Adebayo doesn’t play, we don’t score at the moment.

Osho was my man of the match. Looking really good the last 2 games.

And if we’ve seen the last of Simon and don’t get chance to say goodbye, thanks to him for everything. Best keeper since Sealey. Made all the greater by battling back from a a lot of criticism at the start. Hope he gets into the national team properly soon.
