Sluga set for exit as Jones says transfer deadline will bring ‘clearer explanation’

Simon Sluga looks set to leave Luton after Nathan Jones confirmed the goalkeeper was taken out of the firing line for today’s 0-0 draw with Blackburn Rovers, amid rumours of a move to Bulgarian champions Ludogrets.

There has also been suggestion that West Brom keeper Alex Palmer will come on loan but, speaking about Sluga, the Town manager has promised an explanation on Monday’s transfer deadline day.

The Croatian international has not featured since since the 2-1 defeat to Cardiff two months ago, when he returned from international duty but had to miss out in the following game against Nottingham Forest due to being a close contact of a Croatian team-mate that tested positive for Covid-19.

James Shea stepped in and has since kept five clean sheets in ten games, losing just once in all competitions.

Sluga joined Luton for their first season back in the Championship and is the club’s record signing at £1.3million, but he’s out of contract this summer and it’s understood he is yet to play the amount of games that would trigger a deal extension.

With no guarantees that he’ll jump ahead of Shea, if may be a case of recouping some cash, rather than the keeper seeing his contract expire and walking away for free.

Asked about his absence from the squad today, Jones said: “Let’s not speculate. He’s not injured, so I don’t want to come here and barefaced lie to you, but things are in motion and we’ll have a bit more news for you on Monday.

“Then we can explain everything and what’s going on. I could barefaced lie and say he’s injured, but he’s not.”

Asked if Sluga has played his last game for Town, the manager said: “I can’t say that. There are certain things going on that we felt, today, would be better not to put him in.

“His mind has to be on it, but he’s been fantastic for us. A great attitude, we love Simon here, but things are happening here and we just had to take him out of the firing line today.

“But it’s not an injury. I don’t want to categorically lie to you. I like to be honest, but rather than probe it and keep saying the same things, let’s wait until Monday and we’ll have a clearer explanation for you.”

  1. Shea has come on tremendously so no worries there we need a good back up in case of injury to him.Long may his shut outs continue in the home stretch. Come on you Hatters.

  2. Been a good servant seems like a personal issue – family comes first. Shea has developed into a far better keep than he was an Isted has stepped up too so no worrys on that front
