Teden Mengi is now fully fit, but Luton boss Jack Wilshere has confirmed his future lies away from Kenilworth Road and is looking for a new club.
The 24-year-old, who signed from Manchester United ahead of the Premier League season in 2023, has not featured for Town since February, after injuring his hamstring.
While the former England Under-21 international is available to play, as Town prepare to open their new campaign with a Carabao Cup clash at Gillingham tomorrow, he has slipped down the defensive pecking order.
Hakeem Odoffin emerged as a key player as Luton finished last term with an 11-game unbeaten streak, and this summer Wilshere has strengthened his backline with the signing of Bolton Wanderers captain George Johnston. Both players started at centre back in last weekend’s 1-0 pre-season defeat to Go Ahead Eagles, with the latter winning the man of the match award.
Mengi was yesterday handed a squad number for the new season – though Lasse Nordås, Jerry Yates, Reuell Walters and Tom Holmes were not – but he has been told he can leave Luton, with around three weeks of the transfer window remaining.
Manager Wilshere said: “I spoke about Teds earlier on in pre-season. We brought in a centre back, Hacks [Odoffin] came through last year. We still have Mads [Andersen], we still have Kal [Naismith], who can play there.
“So, yeah, while he’s [Mengi] here, of course, he’s training with us and there’s an opportunity for him. However, I think, and I’ve had these conversation with him as well, that it probably is best if he if he finds something else, but we’ll see on that.”
He added: “I want to remain respectful to Teds because he’s someone I’ve got a massive respect for but, yeah, he knows the situation anyway. He’s training, but looking for something.”
